Pearls: Protecting the Value of Your Secret Dreams

What’s your secret dream?

Deep down, most of us have them. Those desires that are so precious to us that we don’t tell anyone about them.

Maybe we don’t tell because we’re afraid that what we long for the most isn’t really something we can have. It’s for better, stronger, more amazing people than just us. Or our dream is so glorious that it seems impossible for anyone, especially for us.

Many of us learned long ago that the world isn’t friendly towards people who have dreams. You’re supposed to sit down, learn the system, and do things the way they’ve always been done. Don’t rock the boat. Don’t make any waves.

Many of us learned that it was safer to suppress our dreams than to face the continual rejection from others and - eventually, when we believed what we were told enough - ourselves.

But your heart hasn’t forgotten it.

All of us were made for glory. All of us were made to do something amazing. All of us were designed absolutely perfectly with the exact specifications we need to fulfill our destinies and change the world.

So why is it that every time you share your dream with someone, they just trample it?

In Matthew 7:6, Jesus said,

Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.

As it is often said, “Hurting people hurt people.” A lot of people have given up hope on their dreams. Some of them mean well when they tell you to give up. They want to spare you the pain that they suffered when they finally gave up. Some of them are just bitter. They couldn’t have their dream, so neither should you.

So be careful who you give your dreams to. Be careful who you share them with.

Not everyone will appreciate your dreams, and those who don’t may make an effort to destroy both them and you.

But how can you pursue your dream if you can’t tell anyone about it?

Not everyone will respond to your pearls like a pig.

There are people out there who know the value of what you have.

The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field.

Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant on the lookout for choice pearls. When he discovered a pearl of great value, he sold everything he owned and bought it!

In Matthew 13:44-46, Jesus is talking about the Kingdom of Heaven. But the Kingdom of Heaven is inextricably tied to fulfilling your dreams because advancing it is part of your purpose.

So don’t give up on your dreams. Just treat them like the precious pearls they are.
