You Can’t Earn Love

A common theme in my writing is characters working to earn love.

Kayden worked to be good enough for Malphanx (The Inventor’s Slave). J worked because his guilt made him feel so inadequate he felt he didn’t deserve to be free unless he worked (Hunger Is the Best Sauce). Felix worked because he had been raised to believe the lie that if you can’t prove you’re worthy of the air you breathe then you deserve to die (Weakness).

But there are two things you need to know. These are not fictitious ideas. These are the truth.

Number One:

God loves you.

Number Two:

You can’t earn His love.

Nothing you do will ever increase God’s love for you. You can never work hard enough to make Him love you more than He already does. He already loves you completely. He already loves you fully. He already loves you even in your weakness, even when you make mistakes, even when you outright hate Him and rebel against Him.

He loves you because He loves you because He loves you.

In any other case, that circular reasoning would be a flaw.

But when God introduced Himself to Moses in Exodus 3, He said: “I AM WHO I AM.”

God is outside of time. Jesus declares that He is the First and the Last, the Alpha and the Omega. Revelation says that He Who sits upon the throne (God) is the One Who was, the One Who is, and the One Who is to come.

Before time began, God is.

After the end of the world, God is.

God has no beginning and no end.

He is literally the standard against which every definition must be measured.

He is the only thing in the universe that doesn’t need something else to measure itself against.

God can define Himself by Himself, with Himself.

God is love, and He loves you.

God loves you because He loves you because He loves you.

And nothing you can do can ever separate you from the love of God. No mistakes. No failures. No sin. No problems. No pain. Nothing in your past. Nothing in your future. Nothing on earth or in heaven or even in hell. (Check out Romans 8:35-39.)

There is only one thing that has the power to keep you from God’s love. Only one thing that can crush your destiny and keep you from the glorious freedom that God has for you. Only one thing.

Are you ready?

That one thing is you.

The only thing that can stop you from receiving the love God wants to lavish on you is you.

If you need love, He wants to love you.

If you want more, He wants to give it to you.

If you need a breakthrough, He’s already set one up for you.

If you’re desperate, He wants you to have hope and know that He is fighting for you and He never fails.

So get out of your own way. Don’t let what you think you know stop you from receiving what you need. Don’t let what other people told you stop you from being set free. Don’t let anything stand in your way.

God is here for you. His love is stronger than anything you’ve done and anything that you could ever do.

Nothing you do could ever make Him love you more–or love you less. Because that’s Who He is.

God is love, and He loves you.

He will never stop loving you.

Never.
